PURPOSE:

Combat planes by the thousands have been built in the United States since 1917. Fighters, bombers, and attack types are the striking weapons of air power and have made world history. Yet, despite their importance, a complete and accurate history of these planes and their characteristics was not available.

The purpose of American Combat Planes is to offer this history, both as a reference and as an interesting story of aviation and war. All combat types built in the United States for the Air Force, Air Navy or for foreign governments are included, together with foreign aircraft bought for American fighting outfits.

PLAN:

This book describes the planes designed to attack an enemy with guns, bombs, or rockets. It excludes the trainers, transports, and observation types which also contribute to air power, but can better be de- scribed in separate studies.

Attention is given both little-known experimentals and famous mass-production jobs with their major modifications. The description, armament, and history of each type is related to other designs, and to their intended military missions

Photographs enable identification of each type, and are accompanied by dimensions, weights, and per- formances. Most of these characteristics are drawn from flight tests and specifications given in official documents once classified, but recently made avail- able.

Part One orients readers on historical and tech- nical factors influencing aircraft design and gives a brief summary of information needed to followwar-plane history, such as aircraft and engine designations.

The body of the work has sections on attack planes, bombers, and fighters, with parallel sections for the corresponding naval types. Planes of each class are discussed in order of their appearance. This pro- vides a more understandable review of progress than listing them by official designation, which is often a poor guide to chronology or even design antecedents.
