The British started using the 105- millimeter OTO Melara howitzer in 1959, a weapon that was used to great effect in such diverse places as Aden and Borneo. Despite being extremely sturdy, its range was rather limited for many military requirements, and this beca- me more and more evident as the years went by. A new model was developed to replace it, one that would combine advanced design, the lightness that was needed to move it around easily and a barrel that would be long enough to reach targets at distances of up to twelve miles. The result was the LI18 Light Gun that has been used in several places of conflict, such as the Falkland Islands, the Persian Gulf and Bosnia. Designed by and for artillerymen The engineers at the Royal Armament Research and Development Establishment at Fort Halstead began work in 1966, basing the project on the requirements of the British Army in 1965 for an artillery weapon that was both light and stable, had a long range and that could be towed across difficult terrain at high speeds.
