 PREFACE

In the preparation the Second Edition of the Atlas of Technics in Surgery was thought desirable to separate the contents into two volumes. This was done for two reasons: 1. facilitate handling by lessening the bulk. 2. To apportion closely allied subject matter into individual volumes for ease of reference. Vol ume 1 is comprised of general and abdominal operative technics, and in Volume 2 thoracic and cardiovascular operations are illustrated. An added feature is the inclusion in Volume 1 thirteen colored photograp done by John M. Loré, M.D., of fresh cadaver specimens injected with colored dyes and two plates of black and white artist illustrations which depict in detail the anatomy of the portal system. These are considered a distinct aid in clarifying the surgical anatomy of this important area In keeping with the policy established in the first edition of the Atlas each of the operations illustrated was seen the artist as performed by the author. This is believed the best way to obtain anatomic realism of the operation room and to depict most accurately the sequential steps of operation The reference lists, which are considered a most important part of the Atlas, were selected on the basis of historic and current interest. Although many refer- ences have been added to those contained in the first edition, none has been deleted The use of references is a tangible way for the author to express gratitude to the many individuals whose efforts have contributed to the progress of surgery I am exceedingly grateful to the many surgeons in the United States and abroad who have contributed materially to the Atlas by their excellent discussions. It is by reading such discussions that the young surgeon, either in training or in practice, may receive guidance in the conduct of a particular operation. The discussions also serve to emphasize the important fact that there are other ways of accomplishing desired result than the method illustrated I am similarly grateful to the artists, whose names are listed elsewhere, for their excellent portrayals of the varied operative technics. In particular I should like to mention Alfred Feinberg and Robert Wabnitz as the artists who made the major contributions I should like also to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to Sister M Columcille, o.S.F., the Administrator of St. Clare's Hospital, for her expressed kindness and consideration; to Sister M.
