Gallipoli
In January 1915, Imperial Russia appealed to her allies for help against the seemingly invincible Central Powers. Churchill, as First Lord of the Admiralty, overrode the advice of his First Sea Lord, the aged Fisher (Damn the Dardanelles - they will be our grave!), and persuaded the Cabinet, unversed in war, to sanction a naval expedition to force its way to Constantinople. It was to eliminate Turkey from the war and thus sustain Russia's war effort
The campaign, which veered from the brink of victory to final resounding defeat, was one of the most interesting in modern history. It saw the end of an era in Britain; after Suvla it would never again be possible to recruit a volunteer army as had Kitchener in 1914. It also saw the emergence into full statehood of Australia and New Zealand (where the story of Anzac has rightly become part of the modern Zeitgeist), and the beginnings of modern Turkey under Kemal Atatürk; he first appears on the historical stage at Gallipoli.
Michael Hickey traces the complex roots of catastrophe to the remoteness of war leaders in London, the chaotic operations of under-equipped and incompetent admirals and generals on the spot, and the extraordinary diversity of the Allied troops. Closely familiar with the battlefields and the straits, he unfurls a panorama of tenacity and heroism in conditions sometimes reminiscent of the Crimean War. By drawing on official papers, diaries and lettersmany never published before - he gives an awe-inspiring impression of what it was like for the luckless fighting men who did their best but also, in the words of one of them, were 'beaten in the end by our own leaders
Colonel Michael Hickey served in the Army Air Corps, flying operationally in Korea, Malaya, East Africa and the Near East as well as in Germany. He taught at the Royal Military College of Science, was a Defence Fellow at King's College, London, and was later Director of the Museum of Army Flying. His most recent book is the critically acclaimed The Unforgettable Army, on Slim and his 14th Army in Burma. He and his wife have two sons and live in Hampshire
