PREFACE e genesis of this book is a conversation about seven or eight years ago between one of the coauthors and Edward B. Vandiver III, the Director of the U.S. Army's Concepts Analysis Agency, in Bethesda, Maryland. We were bemoaning the fact that none of the computer models of combat then in use by the Army for purposes of planning and budgeting had been validated. (A model is "validated" when it can reliably replicate real-world experience; without valida- tion, no one can be sure that the forecasts or projections of the model are accurate.) The problem," said Ed Vandiver, "is that we do not have histori- cal data for a modern combined-arms battle in sufficient detail to pro- vide inputs to our models." He added that the battle would have to be one in which large numbers of tanks were engaged, since there would be large numbers of tanks in any future battle projected by today's models. We agreed that it would be nice if we could get data for the large tank battles in the 1973 October War in the Middle East. We also agreed that we could not get the data from the Israelis, Egyptians, or Syrians. "What about the Battle of the Bulge?" the coauthor asked. Van- diver thought that would be a good idea. Then he probably forgot about the conversation. But our coauthor did not. He went back to his office and began to prepare a proposal. To make a truly long story short, many months later the proposal was submitted to Vandiver and approved, and in due course our company went to work to pro- duce what became officially known as "The Ardennes Campaign Sim-
