Preface to the Third Edition

The science of surgery continues to expand and change at a rate which makes only the title of a textbook immutable. The editors remain devoted to the concept of a modern source of information and therefore offer this third edition as evidence of their concern. The third edition of Principles of Surgery maintains its consistent format, while reflecting the changes which have evolved over the past five years. There are 15 new authors and approximately 35 percent of the text has been altered. Chapters which were rewritten by new authors include: Endocrine and Metabolic Responses to Injury: Shock: Burns; Chest Wall, Pleura, Lung, and Mediastinum; Peritonitis and Intraabdominal Abscesses, Pituitary and Adrenal; Pediatric Surgery; and Urology. All other chapters have been extensively revised and updated. Each of the chapters in the "Basic Considerations" section have undergone major changeparticularly those concerned with oncology and transplantationreflecting the explosion of knowledge in these areas. The specific organ system chapters have been revised with an emphasis on newly introduced diagnostic techniques and current consensus of opinion regarding management.
