     This monograph describes two of the most common endocrine glands requiring both medical and surgical management. The topics covered include the basic embryology, physiology, and the majority of disease processes that arise from malfunction of the thyroid or parathyroid. It is not possible to completely separate or discuss the disease entities independently, since many inflammatory, traumatic, neoplastic, and surgical procedures affect or injure both glands. The type of surgical procedures used in the treatment of thyroiditis or thyroid cancer, for example, is controversial, and the rationale for the suggested as well as for other treatment programs is documented by sound pathophysiologic explanations. In addition, many of the complexities of hyperparathyroidism that require different operative ap- proaches are discussed in detail, and the results anticipated with each are clearly defined. The monograph should be of value to all practicing surgeons and can serveas a reference volume for the physician, resident, or student. The material is presented in a clear, logical fashion with both medical and surgical treatment and physiology discussed in depth
