The materials in this book have been carefully selected to supplement textbooks in educational psychology by providing ready access to source materials on the central problem of educational psychology the learning process. These selections on human learning emphasize experimental studies of the learning process in its various forms, the dynamic functions involved in this process, and developmental and evaluational problems related to the study of the learning process. The materials have been chosen for their usefulness in advancing an understanding of how we learn and in illustrating how the learning process may be studied. Each selection is reported in as complete form as possible in order to reflect faithfully the nature, conditions, and methodology as well as the results of the study. It has been the experience of the authors that the reading of textbook generalizations about the learning process and the highly condensed anal- yses of associated technical learning problems frequently has little meaning either to beginning or to experienced teachers. Of many possible reasons for such lack of understanding other than the typical generalized text approach, a significant one would appear to be the tendency to treat the general learning process, the different types of learning, the technical problems in learning, and the practical problems of teaching as relatively isolated topics. In such an approach to the study of educational psychology, the student tends to lose sight of learning as process, since the ap proach is directed toward fragmented aspects of knowledge about learning and teaching rather than toward an understanding of the flow of an on going process.......
