Earth currents in tradition and theory the mysterious earth-currents which thrill the clay of our bodies Rudyard Kipling, Kim Britain's ancient past, the time before the arrival of the Romans, is shrouded in mystery. The general picture held by most people is of a land of savages, living degraded lives in caves or rough huts, meeting together every so often to erect a Stonehenge or Silbury Hill at the dictates of the priests. Then the Romans came and civilised them, and the march of progress has continued ever since. It is tacitly assumed that our distant ancestors were ignorant and dull-witted, and that our present attitudes and mode of life must be superior in every way. Undoubtedly there are some people who do not hold these views. Today especially there is a wide interest in prehistory from both the archaeol sieve the soil for the material fragments that remain from earlier civilisa- tions; while mediums tune in to other-dimensional sources of knowledge. Both approaches produce results, and any individual's acceptance of them must depend on his own inclination. However, it is not the intention of this book to investigate either of these avenues, for our research into the nature of the people of prehistoric Britain follows another line, that of folklore. and mystical approaches. How many more have been destroyed by the encroachments of man during the past 2,000 years? There are traditions connected with many ancient sites which might, if carefully interpreted, provide new insights into the nature, abilities, and beliefs of prehistoric man. There are risks, of course, in following such a line of research, one being that we rarely have any means of knowing how old any particular tradition is. But even if a tradition is relatively recent, perhaps only 500 years old, it still indicates the attitude of the originator towards the ancient site to which it relates, and this attitude would itself be based on inherited attitudes. feature of many of the traditions we shall include in the following chapters is their apparent absurdity.
