Above all, the surgeon must be a master student of anatomy; a surgeon who does not know anatomy is like a blind wood carver
JOHN S. NAJARIAN, MD
Embryology and anatomy have become stepchildren in the medical curriculum. For years, students and surgeons, deceived by cell biologists, have come to of the cell needs to be investigated. What a delusion of morbid and colossal dishonesty. What a looming cataclysm!
The authors wonder when the holders of the clinical chairs will wake up um. pelieve that all of macroanatomy has been discovered and that only the microanatomy and demand that surgical anatomy return to its rightful place as the bridge connecting the anatomy laboratory, the textbooks, and the operating room Surgeons will not learn the anatomic entities related to any branch of surgery in the operating room; they must enter it fully prepared. Learning anatomy by trial and error on patients is totally unacceptable. The operating room cannot and must not take the place of the dissection room. The greatest surgeons of the past emphasized and reemphasized this truth.
The superficial and sophomoric teaching of gross human anatomy by incom- petent instructors must come to an end. Students, clinicians, and tomorrow's surgeons have the right to learn anatomy, to know anatomy, and to use this science properly. The modern curriculum has produced graduates ignorant of common congenital anomalies and the topography of anatomic entities that are crucial for clinical diagnosis and the practice of surgery. When surgeons are comfortable with the surgicoanatomic universe, anatomic complications will be few or none in the operating room, and the patient and the surgeon will reach the promised land.
When Giovanni da Verrazano was at sea, 100 leagues from the North Carolina shore, he first smelled the great woods, "the sweetest odors."1 It is our hope and prayer that this new millennium will bring forth the perfume (formaldehyde? oh, yes) of surgical anatomy and embryology
This is the third time that the senior editor has had the honor and privilege to be a guest editor of The Surgical Clinics of North America. I am deeply grateful
